NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)
Ground Penetrating Radar:
The reinforced concrete elements will be subject to a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey in order to determine the concrete cover and the steel layout beneath. Minor demolition (chipping) and/or drilling may be required to more accurately evaluate embedded reinforcing steel to visually assess its condition. GPR utilizes electromagnetic reflection technology to create subsurface images.
GPR scans will be collected in X and Y directions in 2D in 1. m line.
HCP/Corrosion Mapping:
As standard electrode (Ag/AgCL) with a fixed corrosion potential (voltage) will be used to measure the value of corrosion potential on the steel via a voltmeter. Corrosion half-cell potentials show the corrosion risk of the reinforcing steel due to the formation of the anodes and cathodes on the steel. Measurements are taken, only after steel continuity is confirmed, on reinforced concrete surfaces on grid points. The results are then plotted as colour contour maps to provide an immediate representation of corrosion problems.
HCP will be done on a maximum area of 1m2, @ 300 x300mm grid size
Ultrasonic Pulse Echo:
Ultrasonic tomography is a non-destructive measuring technique for the evaluation of concrete thickness, position of embedment and presence of voids, delamination and impurities. Tomographic imaging is a two dimensional reconstruction of the material structure represented by its mutually perpendicular cross-section. The screening and evaluation method comprises a plurality of scanning steps in which the scanner assembly performs a successive scanning of an object plane to capture a series of tomographic images which can be evaluated.
Rebound Hammer Testing:
The Rebound Hammer Test, also known as the Schmidt Hammer Test, is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method to assess the surface hardness and strength of concrete. It works by measuring the rebound of a spring-loaded plunger after it strikes the concrete surface. The rebound value correlates with the compressive strength of the concrete, providing a quick and easy estimate of surface hardness without damaging the structure. This test is ideal for assessing the uniformity of concrete in different areas and identifying potential weak spots, making it a valuable tool in the evaluation of existing concrete structures alongside other NDT methods.
