Seawater Intake Pumping Station – Fujairah

Project Overview

CDE Engineering Services was appointed by Samsung C & T to carry out a detailed structural condition assessment of the seawater intake pumping station located in Fujairah.

The objective of the project was to investigate cracking observed in the structure, assess durability performance under aggressive marine exposure, and evaluate the structural integrity of critical elements.

Client

Samsung C & T

Location

Fujairah, UAE

Client Challenge

The structure exhibited visible cracking in beams, slabs, and other structural elements exposed to a marine environment.

Given the aggressive exposure conditions, including chloride-rich seawater, there were concerns regarding corrosion of reinforcement, long-term durability, and structural performance. The client required a detailed investigation to determine the cause of cracking and assess associated risks.

Scope of Work

  • Visual inspection of structural elements
  • Non-destructive and intrusive testing
  • Assessment of concrete properties and chloride contamination
  • Evaluation of crack patterns and structural behaviour
  • Durability assessment under marine exposure conditions
  • Development of repair and protection recommendations

Our Approach

CDE carried out a comprehensive investigation combining field inspection, laboratory testing, and engineering evaluation.

Visual inspections were conducted to identify crack locations and patterns. Testing methods, including material sampling and laboratory analysis, were used to evaluate compressive strength and chloride content.

The assessment focused on understanding the influence of marine exposure on structural performance and identifying mechanisms contributing to deterioration.

Key Findings

Cracks were observed in multiple structural elements, including beams and slabs, primarily influenced by environmental exposure and service conditions.

High chloride content was detected in concrete samples, confirming the impact of seawater exposure and indicating a significant risk of reinforcement corrosion.

Despite the presence of cracking and durability concerns, the structure was found to be generally stable, with no immediate signs of structural failure.

Solutions & Recommendations

CDE recommended targeted repair and protection measures to address durability concerns and prevent further deterioration.

Cracks were to be sealed using appropriate injection techniques to prevent ingress of moisture and chlorides.

Surface protection systems and anti-corrosion measures were recommended to mitigate the effects of marine exposure.

A long-term maintenance and monitoring strategy was also advised to ensure continued structural performance.

Outcome

The assessment provided the client with a clear understanding of the impact of marine exposure on the structure and the associated durability risks.

By implementing the recommended repair and protection measures, the client can enhance durability, mitigate corrosion risks, and ensure continued safe operation of the facility.
